From the Bandy Records label compilation Love You, New Orleans is a song from Lil’ Buck, called “Walking In the Mist.” I don’t know anything about Bandy Records, but it seems they were putting out compilations in the late 70s or early 80s of great New Orleans hits and b-sides from the 60s, as well as comps of Irma Thomas, Ernie K-Doe, and Huey “Piano” Smith. They don’t seem incredibly rare, but some of the material on them definitely is.
Who is Lil’ Buck? I have always assumed he was Paul “Lil’ Buck” Sinegal, the guitar player from Lafayette, Louisiana, who’s played with a bevy of local musicians including Clifton Chenier and Buckwheat Zydeco. He had his first solo record produced by Allen Toussaint in 1998. Both geographically and relationship-wise, it makes sense that “Lil’ Buck” and “Lil’ Buck” Sinegal are one and the same. I’ve just never been able to find “Walking In the Mist” in his discography, or find out anything about this incredible, plaintive song. Dig the way this guy is singing! It’s palpable. He’s bumming hard walking in that mist.
